What to See in Medellín by Car: 10 Places You Can't Miss
Medellín is a city best enjoyed by car. The metro and cable car cover the center and communes well, but to reach the best viewpoints, nearby towns, and the spots tourists don't know about, a car is unbeatable. Here's our list of the 10 places you can't miss.
1. El Poblado and Parque Lleras
Medellín's most cosmopolitan neighborhood, full of restaurants, specialty coffee shops, galleries and nightlife. Parque Lleras is the heart of the area — ideal for starting or ending the day. By car you arrive in minutes from anywhere in the city and can park at nearby malls like El Tesoro or Santafé.
2. Cerro El Volador — the city's best viewpoint
An urban nature park in the heart of Medellín with 360° views over the entire city. It's free, safe and little known by tourists. By car you reach the parking at the base of the hill and walk 20 minutes to the summit. The sunset from here is spectacular.
3. Guatapé and La Piedra del Peñol
The most popular day trip from Medellín, and for good reason. La Piedra del Peñol is a 200-meter monolithic rock with absolutely epic views of the reservoir. The town of Guatapé, with its colorful facades, is one of the most beautiful in Colombia. By car it's 1h 45min from El Poblado — a perfect round-trip day.
4. Santa Fe de Antioquia — the colonial town
Colonial capital of Antioquia just 1 hour from Medellín. Warm climate, cobblestone streets, 17th-century churches and the Puente de Occidente, one of the oldest suspension bridges in the Americas. Ideal for a relaxed Saturday. The road goes through the Túnel de Occidente and is completely flat.
5. Parque Arví — nature 30 minutes away
An ecosystem of forests, lagoons and trails at 2,500 meters altitude in the mountains above Santa Elena. You can arrive via Metrocable from Acevedo station or — much more comfortably — by car via the Santa Elena road. The cool air, weekend farmers' markets and mountain biking trails make this a must-visit.
6. The Historic Center and the Metrocable
The heart of Medellín: Plaza Botero with Fernando Botero's monumental sculptures, the Museum of Antioquia, Parque de Las Luces and Palacio de La Cultura. By car you arrive easily and park at the Palacio de Exposiciones or downtown parking lots. From Acevedo station you take the cable car to the comunas.
7. Medellín Botanical Garden
An oasis of tranquility in the city center with over 1,000 plant species, orchids, butterflies and the famous Orquideorama — an iconic architectural structure worth seeing even if you're not a plant enthusiast. Entry is free. Perfect for a relaxed morning.
8. El Retiro and the Las Palmas road
The Las Palmas road is one of the most beautiful in Colombia — it winds up from El Poblado to El Retiro and Rionegro with spectacular views of the Aburrá Valley. El Retiro is a quiet town with antique markets, cafés and country restaurants. Just 45 minutes from Medellín and virtually unknown to tourists.
9. Jericó — Antioquia's most beautiful town
Two hours southwest of Medellín, Jericó is a coffee-growing municipality declared a National Heritage site. The neo-Gothic cathedral, the Virgin's hill with cable car, specialty coffee shops and total silence make this town a perfect long weekend escape. The road is paved and most of the journey is via highway.
10. Río Claro — jungle and caves 3 hours away
A nature reserve in a marble canyon over the Río Claro, on the road to Bogotá. Zip lines, kayaking, caves with bats and dense jungle. There's no direct public transport and tours are expensive — in your own or rental car the experience is completely different: you arrive when you want, stay as long as you like and pay only the reserve entrance fee.
