"I don't have a credit card — can I still rent a car in Medellín?" It's one of the most common questions we receive, especially from Colombian travelers. The short answer: yes, in many cases it is possible. But there are important conditions you should know before booking.
Why do car rentals require a credit card?
The credit card is mainly used for the security deposit — a pre-authorization that covers possible damage or fines. It's not an actual charge; it's simply a hold on your available credit. Most companies require credit cards because they allow this pre-authorization to be made easily and reversed.
Alternatives to credit card payment
- Visa or Mastercard debit card: accepted in some cases for the deposit, subject to available funds
- Cash deposit: possible for certain vehicles and under specific conditions — ask when booking
- Bank transfer: for rental payment (not for the security deposit)
- PSE: online rental payment without needing a credit card
Which vehicle categories can I rent without a credit card?
In general, economy and mid-range vehicles are the most flexible when it comes to deposit payment methods. Premium and VIP vehicles almost always require a credit card due to the deposit amount. If you don't have a credit card, we recommend booking a Kia Picanto, Renault Kwid, Chevrolet Onix or similar and asking about available deposit options.
Minimum requirements to rent without a credit card
- Valid ID (national ID or passport)
- Valid driver's license
- Be at least 24 years old
- Cash deposit or debit card with sufficient funds
- Confirm availability of this option when booking
Important: the rental payment (the cost of the rental) can always be made by transfer, PSE, cash or debit card. The credit card discussion applies only to the security deposit.
